Кровать из голых досок, баланда и сухой хлеб, зловонная камера и лишь одна книга в неделю. Отсюда его перевели в Вандсворт, где из-за халатности врачей он наполовину оглох. Затем тюрьма Рэдинг, где вместе с «заключенным С.3.3» томились не только убийцы, но и двенадцатилетние мальчишки, ловившие кроликов на чужих землях. Как затем писал Уайльд в «Балладе Рэдингской тюрьмы»:

После освобождения в 1897 году Уайльд сменит имя на Себастьяна Мельмота, позаимствовав его из романа своего двоюродного деда Чарльза Метьюрина «Мельмот Скиталец». Он уедет во Францию и, наконец, встретится с Боузи, который так ни разу и не навестил его в тюрьме. Но жизнь уже никогда не наладится. Страшно постаревший, располневший от дешевой еды, Уайльд будет скитаться по отелям, запивая тоску абсентом и досаждая друзьям просьбами о деньгах. Он увидит, как уходят из жизни те, кого он любил и ненавидел. В 1898 году закончатся земные страдания его жены Констанс, которая всегда старалась помогать мужу, хотя и не смогла принять его странности. В том же году скончается Обри Бердслей, близкий друг Уайльда и лучший иллюстратор его произведений. 31 января 1900 года умрет маркиз Куинсберри.
